A Prayer for children in detention

Jesus, friend of all children hear the cries of the hundreds of innocent sanctuary-seeking children who are in captivity in our land today
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Remember them as their friends enter into their new school year
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Remember them as free children begin kicking their feet through the falling leaves
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Remember them, as we begin to prepare for your coming to earth in a hostile, occupied city at Christmastime
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Remember them, as they live through days, weeks and months of fear and uncertainty
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

We pray for these innocent children that they will not lose their trust in people and that they will not lose hope in all of humankind
How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Jesus, friend of every child you were once a refugee child too. How can they sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?

Jesus, forgive us. Show us what we can do to bring justice for these children.
Jesus, how can these sanctuary-seeking children sing the Lord's song in this foreign land?
